This is one of the finest piano recordings to come out in recent years. The recording and piano quality, alone, is worth the price of the recording. It is one of those piano recordings in which the piano sound just floats beautifully upon a deep background of crystal clear silence.
Then there is the playing. Roberto Prosseda offers us an unassuming and deceptively simple virtuosity in his rendering of these rarely played (and never before recorded) works of Mendelssohn, shaping them all into the gems that they really are. His rhythm and tempo changes are solid and spot on, never rushing, never losing momentum, and his touch is always full of perfectly balanced voicings and subtle colorations that simply cannot be described. Perhaps it is fortunate that he plays three selections from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," as one can appreciate how his piano coloration perfectly reminds one of the original orchestration.
I don't know if this recording was ever nominated for a Grammy, but in today's world of neglected quality, I would not be surprised if it were not. And if not, it should have been, as the playing of Mr. Prosseda is as much of a discovery as the Mendelssohn gems themselves."

..."There's a lot of unknown Mendelssohn, but if Mozart's juvenilia gets recorded regularly there's little reason not to try out the work by a composer who was at least Mozart's equal in the child prodigy department. Besides, not all of this stuff is early: Mendelssohn's own arrangements of three numbers from A Midsummer Night's Dream ought to be in every pianist's encore repertoire, but for some reason they aren't. The Scherzo in particular works fabulously well as a piano piece, but both the Nocturne and Wedding March also sound terrific in the hands of Italian pianist Roberto Prosseda, whose performances have plenty of nimble-fingered character and (where necessary) atmosphere. The other major work on the disc is an imposing Fantasia in C minor--three large movements, the last of which is a fugue, taking up some 25 adventure-filled minutes. Mendelssohn was only 14 when he wrote the work, but its improvisatory character and wealth of enjoyable thematic material certainly doesn't sound at all immature. The Capriccio in E-flat minor, composed around the same time, also is a very satisfying extended piece. The remaining eight items are all occasional works, including several prototypical "songs without words" and an especially delightful little Sonatina in E major. All of them are beautifully played by Prosseda and sonorously recorded. There are some real gems here; it's a program well worth seeking out and hearing. rating: 9/9"

Non si ha mai l’impressione che il gusto per la ricerca copra i limiti tecnici o stilistici dell’esecutore. Al contrario, a motivare le sue proposte è sempre un’ idea esecutiva, quasi che le musiche fossero da lui “viste” in anticipo per come suoneranno in concerto o in disco, cioè per come saranno in grado di reggere il confronto con il pubblico. Prosseda riesce a mostrare il talento di Mendelssohn allo stato puro, evidenziando come già giovanissimo Mendelssohn mirasse a un’idea di classicità fondata sull’equilibrio formale ed espressivo, su un sentimento della “natura”, potremmo dire, che Prosseda restituisce alla perfezione."

Many of the pieces presented on the Decca CD, "Mendelssohn Discoveries," are intimate, almost diary-like compositions that offer biographical sketches of a composer who, with his happy marriage and financial security, sits oddly among the tormented geniuses of his age. There is a Kleines Lied written on his honeymoon, an Adagio and Presto Agitato presented to the love-struck daughter of a Scottish laird, and a Song Without Words presented like a well-wishing greeting card to his sister Fanny when she was about to give birth. But there are also hints, in the music, of greater emotional depth fed by tension. "I think he suffered a lot behind this apparently quiet life," says Mr. Prosseda. "But he never wanted to show off suffering the way Chopin and Beethoven did, he always tried to keep a certain composure. So when the suffering comes out, it comes out even more dramatically."As evidence he cites the newly discovered Fantasia in C Minor, written in 1823. Its central Adagio, a gorgeous reverie that is both intensely introverted and emotionally expressive, sounds to Mr. Prosseda "like the confessions of an old man who has suffered many tragedies in his life." It certainly does not sound like the composition homework of a 13-year old. The Fantasia is intriguing also because it undermines common conceptions of Mendelssohn as a musical conservative. An extensive improvisation-like work, it contains a complex harmonic program that keeps shifting from C minor into D major and modulates into remote tonalities that foreshadow the harmonic innovations of Schumann, Chopin, and even Liszt."

...""If you enjoy early Mendelssohn (and you can argue that much of it is better than late Mendelssohn), you'll certainly want this disc, containing as it does four totally unknown piano sonatas. Each has three movements, and each is based in a minor key: F, E, A, and C. This is a good thing: Mendelssohn in minor keys has his own special brand of musical pathos, and it was to some extent present from the beginning. Of the four sonatas the F minor and E minor are quite large in concept and are very successful, even though the composer was only about 11 when he wrote them. The little A minor sonata comes closest to the style of Haydn and Mozart, with its central minuet enclosed by two very short, quick movements. The remainder of the disc consists of three etudes, in C major, A minor, and D minor, and two fugues, in E-flat and C-sharp minor respectively. Both are imposing pieces; the latter, which is a double fugue, is particularly ample in scale and quite grand in terms of its musical architecture. It's fascinating to see how often Mendelssohn was drawn to minor keys, given his reputation as a somewhat facile, reserved artist. While this isn't exactly music dripping with emotion in the mode of, say, Berlioz (or even Schumann), it certainly isn't shallow, and of course it's unfailingly pleasing to the ear. As in his first volume of Mendelssohn rarities, pianist Roberto Prosseda proves a reliable guide to these unfamiliar pieces, and he is very well recorded. He has the right lightness of touch in the quick movements of the sonatas, and he never makes the mistake of treating the music more sententiously than it deserves. His legato playing in the slow movements is also very sweet, but tastefully so, never cloying. [...] the performances are technically fully up to the task at hand. Very appealing indeed! rating: 9/9"
