Wed, September 14, 2011
On 13 September 2011 Roberto Prosseda made his debut on the pedal-piano, giving Gounod’s Concerto for pedal-piano and orchestra its first modern performance. He is the first concert pianist to give concerto performances with the pedal-piano, an instrument that has till now been forgotten, due also to the lack of performers able to play it.
On Tuesday 13 September, in the Cathedral of Forlì, Roberto Prosseda gave the first modern performance of the Concerto (1889) for pedal-piano and orchestra by Charles Gounod, with the Orchestra Toscanini di Parma conducted by Jan Latham-Koenig. The programme also included the première of Cristian Carrara’s Magnificat (2011) for pedal-piano and orchestra. It was Prosseda’s debut with this particular, very rare instrument, which he played for the first time in the modern era with a large symphony orchestra. The great success accorded by audience and critics alike showed that it was not merely a question of a musicological curiosity, but the genuine, important revival of an instrument which after a hundred years of complete oblivion is now once more alive and present in concert life.

Three concerts in Leipzig in fall 2010 ![]()
The German city of Leipzig, where both Schumann and Mendelssohn were based for the most significant part of their life, virtually adopted Roberto Prosseda: he is performing there very often since 2006. Last year Roberto also recorded live his Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto no. 3 for Decca with the Gewandhausorchester and Riccardo Chailly.
This year, Roberto is appearing three times in Leipzig. Last September 3rd he gave a very acclaimed recital at the Gewandhaus, being one of the very few pianists invited in the klavierabend series (the other pianists are Grygory Sokolov, Emanuel Ax, Duo Tal & Groethuysen, Denis Matsuev).
Next October 10 Roberto will appear at the Schumann Fest, participating in the complete performance of Schumann's piano works composed in Lepizig, together with Andras Schiff and other very accomplished pianists.
On November 7th Roberto will return at the Gewandhaus for a chamber concert with the Gewandhaus quartet.

Enthusiastic reviews for the new Schumann Decca CD
After only few weeks from its release, Roberto Prosseda's Schumann Album got very enthusiastic reviews in Italy, Switzerland and Germany:
Thanks to his ability to chisel the sound with his notable touch, Prosseda creates magic. This is pianistic art at the highest level, which is evident first of all in the infinite range of colours and nuances he obtains from the piano, particularly on the borders of silence, perfect for this type of music.
Peter Korfmacher, Leipzig Volkszeitung, August 13, 2010
Prosseda's Schumann is both “so close, so distant”, to quote Wim Wenders. It is close to us because of the archetypical moods expressed. The “distance” is given by its unmistakable legend dimension, but also by a deep Romantic poetry and spirituality which is today very difficult to save from the oblivion.
Luca Ciammarughi, Milano Finanza, August 28, 2010
