Roberto Prosseda - Bizet: Chants du Rhin, WD 52: VI. Le retour
Bizet: Chants du Rhin 'Lieder sans paroles', HM136 - No 6 in D flat major: Le retour: Allegro vivace Roberto Prosseda (piano) Read more and order the CD: https://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA68491 *** In 1857 Bizet won the prestigious Prix de Rome which took him to that city for over two years. Composing for the piano ceased to be a concern, since his sights were now set on opera and success in the theatre. His horizons widened, and he returned to Paris in 1860. Composing 'Les pêcheurs de perles' and the grand opera 'Ivan IV' was his main occupation until 1865 when he wrote six piano pieces under the title 'Chants du Rhin' for the publisher Heugel. Since Bizet was transcribing over 700 pages of opera arias for him, some of them quite elaborately, he no doubt had a right to expect Heugel to publish something of his own. The subtitle ‘Lieder pour piano’ reflects the strongly melodic and domestic character of this music, echoing Mendelssohn. The six pieces are supported by six poems and a ‘Prélude’ by François-Joseph Méry, a poet of the older generation who wrote plays and librettos in abundance. ‘Le retour’ brings the party home at the end of the day, weary and content. The attractive theme keeps returning, reminding us of the everlasting spell of the river and its bewitching song: ‘le Rhin chante toujours’. from notes by Hugh Macdonald © 2026 *** Follow Roberto Prosseda: Facebook - @ProssedaRoberto X - @RobertoProsseda Instagram - @robertoprosseda Follow Hyperion: Instagram / Facebook / X / Bluesky - @hyperionrecords #robertoprosseda #hyperion #bizet #bizetpianoworks #piano
